Two Northwood Esports players have signed agreements to play professionally.

Stephen “HockE” Hoelbinger, of West Deptford, New Jersey, has signed a professional Rocket League contract with the professional esports organization, TSM. Diego “Vega” Moran, of Fort Worth, Texas, signed a professional Overwatch contract with the Toronto Defiant.

“We couldn’t be more proud of these two students, and we look forward to watching them compete professionally,” stated Northwood Esports Coach Jacob R. Jacob. “We are especially pleased that both students are allowed to continue their college education and compete under the Northwood banner for collegiate events.”

Esports is an umbrella for numerous competitive games, similar to a university’s athletics department serving as an umbrella for numerous traditional sports. So Rocket League and Overwatch are to an esports program what football and basketball are to a university’s athletics program.

Hoelbinger was instrumental in Northwood Esports winning the Collegiate Rocket League National Championship in November.

“It’s an honor to join TSM and be a part of a prestigious organization,” Hoelbinger said. “I’m looking forward to this amazing opportunity. Without a place like Northwood that let me dedicate myself to the Rocket League grind, I don’t think I would be where I’m at today.”

Moran played an integral role in Northwood Esports winning the Overwatch national champion in October. “Despite my reputation and years of competitive experience, my age was the biggest gatekeeper for me to play Overwatch professionally. But now that I’m old enough, it feels good to finally reach my goal,” Moran said. “Northwood gave me an environment to further develop my talent for Overwatch and pushed me to be better, while I grinded for another chance to get signed.”
