These Hands Don’t Hurt, They Hoop: Alpha Chi Omega event dunks on domestic violence

October 17, 2024
On a gym floor, a group of people confidently pose with basketballs, standing proudly in front of a banner proclaiming "These Hands Don’t Hurt," symbolizing empowerment and unity.

The sisters of Alpha Chi Omega are hosting “These Hands Don’t Hurt, They Hoop” — a basketball tournament event — on Oct. 25 at the Hach Student Life Center at Northwood University.

“‘These Hands Don’t Hurt, They Hoop’ is Alpha Chi Omega’s annual basketball tournament dedicated to raising funds for our philanthropy, the Domestic Violence Awareness Project, and we hold it in October because it is Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” says Philanthropy Chair Kelsey Depault. “This event is our largest fundraiser aimed at generating donations and facilitating education to bring awareness to our community. All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to Shelterhouse in Midland, which aids survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.”

Teams can be formed in groups of six and the cost to participate is $5 per player.

“Anyone can form a team to support the cause, so everyone is encouraged to get some friends together to play some basketball,” notes Depault.

“The work done by the Domestic Violence Awareness Project holds a special place in the hearts of our sisters and our communities, and we are honored to serve such an important cause,” adds Chapter President Nina Whitney. “Did you know that every minute, 32 people experience domestic violence? It’s more common than many realize! By holding fundraisers like ‘These Hands Don’t Hurt, They Hoop’ on campus, we raise funds and help educate students about the prevalence of domestic violence and how they can make a difference.”

‘Hands Don’t Hurt, They Hoop’ will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 25. Teams can sign up here until Oct. 24. To donate to the cause, email Kelsey Depault at for more information.
