NU places second at advertising competition

May 1, 2023
Five people stand side by side, all wearing business attire with name tags, posing confidently in front of a black curtain. They just celebrated securing second place at the NU advertising competition.

Northwood University was runner-up in Friday’s American Advertising Federation’s District 6 National Student Advertising Competition in South Bend, Indiana.

“This is a competition run by the American Advertising Federation where students create a full marketing communication plan for a national brand sponsor. This year, the sponsor was Indeed,” stated Advisor Jennifer McDermitt, an assistant professor who leads Northwood’s marketing communications program.

Northwood students created the plan as part of MKC 4100, which is the capstone course in the marketing communications program and then had to create a pitch to present in front of judges at the event.

“We took second place in our district, competing against schools such as Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Indiana University, and Grand Valley State University and the University of Illinois,” McDermitt stated.

The students included Maya Ferland, Shelby Foor, DeLorean Ishmon, and Logan Stuart. All are seniors who majored in marketing or marketing communications.

“I am so proud of this group of high-achieving marketing students,” McDermitt noted.

One of the team members, DeLorean Ishmon, also won Best Presenter, which came with a cash prize.
