New partnership offers 24/7 access to counselors and well-being resources

Northwood University is expanding students’ access to mental health and well-being services.

“Mental health challenges have become increasingly prevalent on college campuses nationwide,” said Director of Counseling Andy Sovis. “That’s because while college is a time for tremendous growth, it also brings unique stressors that can impact students’ well-being.”

About 70% of students nationwide have struggled with mental health since starting college, according to a 2024 U.S. News & World Report survey. Mental health is the No. 1 reason students drop out of college, according to the Gallup-Lumina Foundation’s State of Higher Education 2024 report.

“Students need access to mental health and well-being support services beyond typical business hours,” Sovis noted. “As such, Northwood is investing in a partnership with a leader in higher education to now provide Northwood students 24/7 access to support services.”

Northwood University is working with TimelyCare, the most trusted virtual health and well-being resource provider in higher education. TimelyCare offers students access to 24/7/365 care at no cost and without the barrier of traditional insurance.

Students can access on-demand mental health and emotional support with TalkNow, which features several providers, ensuring students are connected to help within five minutes. All sessions are online to ensure that everyone who needs access can get the help they need.

“Half of the mental care visits through TimelyCare occur after regular business hours or on weekends, which underscores the need for 24/7 support,” Sovis added.

According to a TimelyCare survey, 64% of students say they are more likely to graduate if they have access to mental health resources.

“At the forefront of our commitment to student well-being is prioritizing health and safety,” said Dean of Student Affairs Andy Cripe. “This partnership with TimleyCare will make it easier than ever for students to access help. Additionally, TimelyCare helps reduce the stigma of mental health issues and grants peace of mind to students and families, knowing that they have around-the-clock access to crucial mental health and well-being resources.”

TimelyCare reports that 75% of college students who accessed virtual mental health and well-being interventions through these services reported their mental health improving – including 100% of students who presented as a potential suicide risk.
