Northwood Esports is closely following the development of the inaugural Olympic Esports Games, which were announced this week by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

“This is a groundbreaking moment for the esports community,” stated Northwood Esports Coach Jacob Jacob. “It marks a significant step towards mainstream recognition and validation of esports as a legitimate and competitive field. Additionally, this could open up incredible opportunities for our players and the entire industry.”

History was made Tuesday when the IOC decided to create the Olympic Esports Games, the first of which will be held in 2025 at a yet-to-be-determined host city.

“This is truly a new era for the IOC,” stated IOC President Thomas Bach in a press release. “With the confirmation by the IOC Session of the creation of the Olympic Esports Games, we are keeping up with the pace of the digital revolution. The esports community, represented in our Esports Commission, has enthusiastically engaged with this initiative. This is further proof of the attractivity of the Olympic brand and the values it stands for among young people.”

According to Tuesday’s announcement, the IOC has partnered with the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Saudia Arabia for the organization of the Olympic Esports Games for 12 years.

The IOC reported on Tuesday that work will begin immediately on selecting a city and venue for the inaugural edition of the Olympic Esports Games, the specific timing of the event, the game titles that will be included, the player qualification process, and further details.

“We are thrilled about the announcement of the Olympic Esports Games,” stated Northwood Esports Assistant Coach Aden Frosch. “This could be a monumental step for esports, and we are eagerly keeping a close eye on all updates, particularly as they relate to collegiate esports.”

In 2019, Northwood University was among the first universities in Michigan to launch a collegiate esports program. Less than three years later, Northwood Esports had earned three world championship titles, making it America’s first collegiate esports dynasty.

“Students want to play for Northwood Esports because it is at the forefront of collegiate gaming, offering a dynamic and inclusive environment for students to engage in competitive gaming,” stated Susie Poli-Smith, vice president of undergraduate enrollment and financial aid. “Our esports program is a testament to Northwood University’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and excellence in education.”

“Northwood Esports has been a phenomenal addition to campus, and it has served as the foundation for many players to sign to play for professional esports organizations,” stated Dean of Student Affairs Andy Cripe.
