Midland Mayor Maureen Donker honored Northwood University’s Esports Program during her annual State of the City address.
Last summer, a Northwood Esports team brought home the Collegiate Rocket League world title. It was Northwood Esports’ first world title. In December, Northwood Esports won the Valorant world championship.
Most recently, Northwood Esports had two teams qualify to represent Team USA in the 2023 Collegiate Rocket League World Championship Series in Dallas, Texas.
Esports is an umbrella for multiple competitive games, similar to how a university’s athletics department is an umbrella to numerous traditional competitive sports.
The following individuals represented Northwood Esports at the mayor’s State of the City address Wednesday, March 22, at The Great Hall Banquet Center in Midland: players Alexander Che of Houston, Texas, Eric Higgins of Fraser, and Aden Frosch of Coppell, Texas; Assistant Coach Jacob Jacob; and Coach Elsen.
That evening, Northwood University welcomed high schoolers to an Esports Open House, where students could meet with world-champion gamers and play in the Northwood Esports training facility.
