Northwood University Closes the Gap for Veterans

The men and women of our military develop exceptional knowledge and skills while serving our country, but when they leave the military, many lack the degrees and credentials the civilian workforce is looking for in new employees.
Northwood University is working to close that gap by helping veteran and service members leverage their military experience in accredited degree programs.
Here are just a few reasons we are a good fit:
We know our students. One of the unique features of Northwood University is that for nearly 50 years we have provided degree programs and instruction on military bases to our Active Duty, Reserves, National Guard members and their families, which puts us in a unique position to understand the needs and qualities these students bring the higher education.
The focus for our military programs is to ensure these students encounter minimal barriers in the process and can leverage their training and experience to complete the degrees that will help them transition into rewarding careers after their service.
We know business. We also know that businesses value the skill sets that many veterans have when the leave the military.
From my perspective, and I am biased as veteran, the military does a great job of developing leaders that can elevate business performance:
· They are trained leaders, and they know how to be good followers
· They understand the concept of teamwork,
· They are decisive in situations with limited information and resources to get the job done.
This is part of business. Northwood helps military students understand how to operate in a new environment through any of our majors. Whether it’s in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management, or our graduate programs through an MBA or Master of Science in Organizational Leadership, any of these are great choices. The great thing is that every undergraduate degree program has room for military training to be counted as academic credit.
We understand that not all learning occurs in the classroom. Many of our veterans have extensive military training and experience with many leaving the military as experts in their field. Some Reservists and National Guard members also have civilian careers and our programs provide an opportunity to draw from both.
Take Gerald Glenn (BBA ’18) for instance. He is a retired Senior Master Sergeant with 33 years in the Air Force in the Cyber Security field, as well an established IT career with the City of Fort Worth. He knows a little about the IT field, and was awarded 60 credits through his dual career. This equaled about two years of coursework that he was awarded from his military and civilian experience.
Northwood University is built on the traditions and values of Freedom, and this group, more than any other, can appreciate what that means. We understand what an immense role education can play to a person who is transitioning from being a military professional to the civilian in the workforce, and we have been doing this a long time.
It’s an honor for us to continue our legacy of serving those who have helped keep our nation free.
