Northwood University will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King (1929-1968), a famous leader of the American civil rights movement, a political activist, a Baptist minister, and a Nobel Laureate, on Monday, January 20, from noon-1:00 p.m. at the NADA Hotel & Conference Center on Northwood’s Midland Campus located at 4000 Whiting Drive.The celebration will involve several Northwood University students. Attendees will be welcomed to the luncheon at noon. The national anthem, the black national anthem and a prayer given by a member of Victorious Student Outreach will follow the welcome. Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech will be read, poetry will be recited and comments will be offered answering the question—“If Dr. King was alive today, would he say we are living his dream?” The closing remarks will be given by the vice president of Minority Business Leaders.
On Saturday, January 18, a Motown food and dance celebration will be held at 8:00 p.m. in the Student Union for students. On Sunday, January 19, Student United Way will host 24 hours of service beginning at midnight. Student United Way is also coordinating a diversity reading program in various elementary schools in Midland from 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 20. Students are encouraged to sign up for participation for the various activities in the Student Life office.
In 1964, Martin Luther King became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work as a peacemaker, promoting nonviolence and equal treatment for different races. Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Jimmy Carter in 1977 and in 1986 Martin Luther King Day was established as a United States holiday.
