Millie Hamady was born in Beirut, Lebanon where her father was a consultant to the President of Lebanon. Her early life was filled with discussions of politics and international diplomacy which led her to study politics at the American University in Beirut. She also studied at the Sorbonne and later earned a degree in political science. She became Mrs. Robert M. Hamady and moved to the U.S. Her married life was active as she raised two children, Robert and Theodore, now of Washington, D.C., supported her husband as he built a large grocery store chain and was active in the arts and community service in Michigan and Florida. Millie has been involved with the boards of the YWCA, the Flint Symphony and the Flint Art Institute, the United Fund and McLaren Hospital, among others. She was the first woman president of the Mackinac Island Association, is a Board of Trustees member of the Michigan Opera Theatre, served on the National Republican Congressional Committee of the US and the Task Force of the USA and is a National Republican Woman. She remains active with the Michigan Opera Theatre, the Mackinac Island Association and, of course, Northwood University. Her keen mind, love for her community, devotion to the arts and love for others have made her life rich and rewarding. She is truly proud to have become a part of the Northwood University community of friends and to be a Distinguished Woman honoree. (Deceased 2001)
