Gertrude R. Crain was chairman of the board of Crain Communications Inc., an international publishing and communications company. Crain publications include Advertising Age, Automotive News, Business Insurance and Crain’s Business in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and New York. Her sons now serve as president and vice chairman. Mrs. Crain served on the board of the International Advertising Association, the National Press Foundation and the Advertising Council. She was associated with the Magazine Publishers of America (NY), the Museum of Broadcast Communications and the Museum of Science & Industry, both located in Chicago. In 1982 she was a founding member of the Committee of 200, an organization consisting of the top 200 entrepreneur women business owners and CEO’s in the country. She has been honored entrepreneurial by the State of Michigan, the City of Chicago, the Los Angeles Advertising Women and she received two honorary degrees. Both Working Woman and Savvy magazines listed Mrs. Crain as a top U.S. business owner and leader. In 1993 she was awarded the prestigious Henry Johnson Fisher Award from the Magazine Publishers of America. (Deceased 1996)
