Ruth Sharp Altshuler is a graduate of Southern Methodist University. Mrs. Altshuler has served on many boards, including the Board of Trustees of SMU and is chairman of the Sharp Foundation. In Dallas, she was the first woman elected to the board of the Salvation Army, as campaign chair of the United Way, as chairman of the Executive Board of Highland Park United Methodist Church, to the board of Goodwill Industries and to the board of the Dallas Citizens Council. Her awards included top honors from the Variety Club of Dallas, Salvation Army, Dallas Historical Society, American Academy of Achievement, Black Woman’s chapter of the Dallas Business and Professional Women, the Press Club and Boys Club of Dallas, Les Femmes du Monde and election to the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame in 1987. In 1982 Pi Beta Phi named her its Outstanding Alumna. She was honored in 1991 by the Texas State House of Representatives for her volunteer work, was named an Outstanding Trustee in the Nation From a Private Institution by the Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities in 1992 and received the National Alexis de Tocqueville Award from United Way of America in 1993. She was also listed by D City Guide magazine as one of fifty people in the past 150 years who have made Dallas what it is today. Ruth is married to Dr. Kenneth Altshuler.
