Ambassador David T. Fischer (Ret.) served as the United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco through January 2021. During his tenure, the Ambassador was instrumental in putting forth a number of key accomplishments, including the monumental Abraham Peace Accords between the Kingdom of Morocco and Israel. The Accords established free and complete trade and reestablished full diplomatic relations between Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco for the first time since 1948. For his efforts, Ambassador Fischer was awarded the National Security Medal and was presented the Wissam Alaouite of the Order of Commander by His Majesty King Mohammed VI. Ambassador Fischer also continues to serve on the Abraham Accords Peace Institute Advisory Board and is a member of the Council of American Ambassadors.
Prior to his tenure as Ambassador, he owned The Suburban Collection, one of the largest automotive dealership groups in the United States, with over fifty facilities across Southeast Michigan, Florida, and Southern California. Ambassador Fischer sold The Suburban Collection to Lithia Motors, Inc. (NYSE) in April of 2021, which is the second largest automotive transaction in the United States to date.
Upon his return to Michigan in 2021, he stepped back into his role as Chairman of the Suburban Collection Holdings, a privately held conglomerate consisting of nationwide accessories and parts distribution, and logistics and fleet management throughout North America. They are also a Tier 1 Supplier to many of the world’s largest automakers.
A respected business executive, Ambassador Fischer’s philanthropic efforts have impacted countless social, welfare, civic, community, and foundational organizations throughout the region. He serves on the Board of Trustees for the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, the Society of The Four Arts, and is a member of the James Madison Council. He also has served as an advisor to multi-national automotive manufacturers and as Chairman Emeritus of the North American International Auto Show. A recognized civic leader and distinguished philanthropist, he has also served as Emeritus Director of the Detroit Institute of Arts, and on the Board of Trustees for the College of Creative Studies where he led the financing and renovation of the historic Argonaut building in Detroit. He served as a member of the Judicial Tenure Commission for the State of Michigan, Chair of the Board of Trustees for Oakland University, and on the Board of Trustees of the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan.
He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from the College of Creative Studies, in Detroit, Michigan, one of the nation’s largest art and design colleges, and an Honorary Doctorate in Science from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. He was also the recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, Casita Maria Gold Medal of Honor, Lighthouse Guild’s Visionary Award, Detroit Institute of Arts Lifetime Service Award, the “In Celebration” award from the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan and The Ireland Funds Distinguished Leadership Award.
David resides in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan with his wife, Jennifer. They have ten fabulous grandchildren.
