How Ambition Meets Opportunity: Career Services Connects Students and Employers

September 13, 2024

At Northwood University, employment isn’t just an end goal — it’s a core outcome. With 82% of graduates securing full-time employment or graduate school acceptance upon graduation, the University’s commitment to career readiness is clear.

Northwood’s Career Services Center is at the forefront of this mission, empowering students with the tools and confidence they need to enter the workforce successfully.

“Our goal is to guide students through every step of their professional development journey, from starting a resume to securing that first job,” says Dr. Steven Poole, Director of Career Services and Professional Development at Northwood University. “We work closely with students to enhance their self-marketing skills, build their LinkedIn networks, develop effective internship/job search strategies, and prepare for interviews.”

Northwood University’s Career Services Center offers a range of events designed to prepare students for the workplace and connect them with employers. Upcoming events for the 2024-2025 school year include:

  • Sept. 15: Suit-Up Event at JCPenney in Saginaw
  • Sept. 18: Fall Career Fair at the Hach Student Life Center
  • Oct. 16: Etiquette Dinner at The H Hotel
  • Nov. 20: Internship Mixer at Dow Diamond
  • Feb. 19: Spring Career Fair at the Hach Student Life Center

Additional events, including resume workshops, personal branding panels, and interview panels, will be added throughout the year.

Preparing Versatile Business Leaders

Northwood students begin their business education from day one. This early immersion into their chosen field makes them well-rounded professionals with a solid understanding of the business industry. The curriculum includes strategic management, business finance, accounting, marketing, ethics, and more, ensuring our students graduate with a comprehensive business education.

“Our students are not just taught the technical skills they need to succeed; they are also ingrained with the principles that make them adaptable, innovative, and ethical leaders,” explains Dr. Matthew Bennett, Vice President of Strategic Alliances and the Center for Automotive and Mobility Studies. “They are ready to add value to any organization from day one — and they do so through a commitment to personal responsibility, earned success, and excellence, all values instilled during their time here at America’s Free Enterprise University.”

Connecting Employers with Future Leaders

Employers recruiting at Northwood University find a deep talent pool of driven, adaptable, and resilient students.

“Northwood University students are keenly aware of the importance of using data and facts to identify and solve problems,” stated Kimberly Warner, Associate Director of Career Services and Professional Development. “They are driven to innovate and make an impact, whether within a local community or on a global scale.”

Northwood Career Services connects employers to new workforce talent and provides resources to help businesses build effective internship programs and best practices for attracting top students. Through Handshake, a free tool for job postings, employers can market their opportunities to current students and a broad network of Northwood alumni.

“We know employers need more than just access to talent; they need reliable partners who can help them develop that talent effectively,” Bennett stated. “Our Career Services team is dedicated to building those partnerships.”
