Constituting America recently featured Dr. Alex Tokarev, an economics and philosophy professor at Northwood University, on its Constitutional Chats podcast.
Constituting America is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating Americans about the Constitution and the rights and liberties it provides for all. Tokarev was an ideal guest for Constituting America’s latest Constitutional Chats podcast, which focused on the American Dream — something that’s near and dear to Dr. Tokarev, who grew up in Bulgaria, a small country in Southeast Europe.
“At that time, Bulgaria was enslaved by the Soviet Union,” Tokarev explained. “Compared to America — and we could see what it was like in the movies — life under socialism was miserable. Three generations of Tokarevs shared a one-bedroom apartment — and we were among the lucky ones.”
Tokarev and his wife came to the United States 25 years ago to pursue their American Dream.
“Today, we have a nice house in Michigan with a big backyard for barbecues and soccer games, two wonderful children who study business at Northwood University, and even a dog,” Tokarev explained. “As we accomplished our academic, professional, and material goals, we realized that none of those were possible without America’s Christian values and free enterprise system. Under socialism, you could have all the money, respect, and power that comes with being a member of the political elite, but you would still be a slave.”
Ahead of America celebrating its Independence Day, Tokarev encourages all Americans to appreciate the economic opportunities available in America’s free enterprise society.
“Let’s keep our faith and our liberty so our children and their children can pursue the American Dream,” he said.
