The community is invited to meet with doctoral candidates from the DeVos Graduate School of Management during programming that is part of the May 9-12 DBA residency at Northwood University.

Doctoral candidates and faculty will be featured in a research poster session that is open to the public from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday, May 10, at the DeVos Graduate School to highlight their research topics.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about some of the top-notch research our students have been working on. The scope and depth of research topics is impressive and would be a valuable opportunity for business leaders and community members to meet our practitioner scholars and learn about their research,” stated Dr. Lisa Fairbairn, Dean of the DeVos Graduate School.

The annual residency includes all doctoral students, regardless of their year in the program. The four-day residency helps students focus on crucial elements of success, including tips on writing, research, and formulating a strong dissertation direction.

May 11 is a special day at Northwood University, as two commencement ceremonies will be held to celebrate undergraduate, graduate, and DBA recipients. Two DBA candidates, Valarie Taffs-Cook of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Shemika Miller, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, will be hooded to signify earning their doctorate.

“Valarie and Shemika have been exemplary candidates, and we couldn’t be prouder to see them on the commencement stage as Northwood’s newest doctor of business degree recipients,” stated Dr. L. Todd Thomas, academic dean and DBA program lead.

That evening, the DBA students will be hosted at the Midland Country Club for a reception and dinner, including a keynote by Carol Williams, who retired following a 34-year career with The Dow Chemical Company, where she held pivotal roles in research and development, eventually assuming executive leadership positions integral to the company’s operations. Notably, she was executive vice president of manufacturing and engineering, supply chain, and environmental, health, and safety operations.

Northwood University’s Richard DeVos Graduate School of Management announced the addition of a DBA degree program in April 2020 and currently has 39 students actively enrolled in the program. The DBA program is a natural next step for those with a master’s degree in a business-related field who want to enhance their knowledge and expertise to transform themselves into better problem-solvers and business leaders. This rigorous 54—to 60-credit-hour program of study focuses on applying existing theories and knowledge to real-world business problems. The result: a complete leader whose marketability has skyrocketed.
