Northwood Esports’ Overwatch Team has won the National Esports Collegiate Conference’s Legends Division spring tournament.

The National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) is a collegiate esports conference for schools in the United States and Canada.

“Every year, collegiate Overwatch gets more and more competitive. But the team has done a great job at being the best of the best,” stated Aden Frosch, assistant director of Northwood Esports. “Going into the playoff bracket for NECC, we had a rough start that sent us into the lower bracket, but our players dug deep to fix their mistakes and win the tournament.”

The tournament was played online on April 11. Northwood won 4-0 to secure the grand finals against Illinois State University.

“We knew we were going to win, we’re simply just the better team,” stated Donovan “Cowman 711” Koch, a student from Mentor Ohio. “A couple weeks ago, we had a bad game against Illinois State, and some were predicting ISU was now home to the best Overwatch team. But going into the grand finals as a rematch against them, we beat them in dominant 4-0 fashion to prove we’re still the best team around.”

Other Northwood Overwatch players include Julian “Rokit” Pizana of El Paso, Texas; Haven “Haven” Healy of Castle Rock, Colorado; Mason “Boat” Earle of Anaheim, California; Diego “Vega” Moran of Fort Worth, Texas; Christopher “Cjay” Smith of Levittown, New York; and James “Faustus” Frye of Vanceburg, Kentucky.

Now Northwood Overwatch will compete for the NECC national title, in addition to the Collegiate Esports Commissioners Cup. Play for both titles will take place from May 3-5 in Arlington, Texas.

Northwood’s Overwatch team is currently 6-0 on the national Swiss stage for the Activision Blizzard Overwatch Collegiate Championship Series. These playoffs will take place online on May 10.
