The Michigan Campus has chosen Jon M. Huntsman’s Winners Never Cheat – Even in Difficult Times as the Omniquest selection for Spring 2011. Mr. Huntsman’s life and writings parallel the Northwood Idea in many ways. This book is a case study of how principles found in the Northwood Idea result in success in real life.
The author, Jon M. Huntsman, is the founder of Huntsman Corporation, a privately held chemical company that was once America’s largest family-owned business. The company went public in 2005, and Mr. Huntsman has since devoted his life to philanthropic pursuits, most notably the Jon Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Huntsman speaks to several beliefs similar to Northwood University’s values and ethics such as:
playing by the rules
setting the example
keeping your word
picking advisers wisely
checking your moral compass
giving back
Huntsman uses examples from history and his own his life to describe the right actions and desired outcomes.
Here’s what others have said about the author and the book:
“Jon Huntsman is a different breed. He believes business is a creative endeavor, similar to a theater production, wherein integrity must be the central character.” –Larry King, CNN
“Jon Huntsman’s own life and personal values lend credence to his words. He walks his ethical talk.” –Neil Cavuto, Fox News
The book is printed in a small format, so at only 250 pages it is a quick read. The edition we will be reading was published in 2009 and is available in hardcover, as well as several e-book reader formats. It is a perfect book to take home over the holidays and read to get a head start on the new Spring semester. You will also be happy to know that all proceeds from the sale of the book go to the Jon Huntsman Cancer Foundation.
The Northwood Idea is real and works; and Jon M. Huntsman has written a book that helps to prove it in the Omniquest selection for Spring 2011, Winners Never Cheat – Even in Difficult Times.
