March 23 is a special date to the Northwood University community, as it is our Founders’ Day. This year, Northwood is celebrating through a series of events on campus as well as the release of the latest video in a free online course about freedom and free-market economics.
“We can’t think of a more fitting way to pay homage to our founders, Arthur Turner and Gary Stauffer, than through a series of complimentary lessons for anyone who is interested in The Northwood Idea and free-market economics,” stated Dr. Dale Matcheck, who chairs Northwood’s Economics Department, and teaches the lesson posted March 23 on the online course, Philosophy of Free Enterprise.
In addition to individual freedom and personal responsibility, The Northwood Idea endorses the ‘Golden Rule,’ requiring each of us to treat others as we would like to be treated. It encourages personal choices that drive progress through courage, self-discipline, hard work and thrift.
“The Northwood Idea also values the importance of free enterprise, as we thrive as a society through voluntary cooperation to create value through serving others’ needs, which in turn advances prosperity and provides funding for schools, charities and government services” Matcheck noted.
The newest video, Prices, Knowledge, & Incentives, is intended to appeal to viewers from all education levels and backgrounds, Matcheck explained.
Other lessons in The Northwood Online course include A Brief History of Progress; Innovation & Innovism; Vocation of Business; Constitution, Rules and Games; and Entrepreneurism.
Northwood will release additional modules with various lessons throughout the year, which will comprise a full course by year’s end. Learners will be able to test their knowledge and earn certificates from Northwood University upon successfully completing the course.
The principal donors behind this effort are Donald S. Gottwald, a 1988 alumnus, and his wife, Pamela. The effort also was aided by a generous gift from the Thomas F. and Harriet S. Oakley Family Trust.
