Northwood University’s Rocket League team continued its run of success by capturing the Evil Geniuses College Showcase tournament crown in a virtual online competition last weekend.
The Timberwolves came out on top of a highly competitive field that included 16 of the top collegiate esports programs featuring some of the top talents in the country. Winning the Evil Geniuses Invitational marks the second major tournament victory in the fall 2021 semester for the highly ranked Northwood Rocket League team.
Rocket League is a game that players control customized cars in a high-powered arcade-style soccer game. The team with the most goals at the end of five minutes of play is victorious.
Held virtually at twitch.tv/evilgeniuses, viewership peaked at 41,000 live viewers and attracted 446,000 total views from esports fans.
The event consisted of a 16 team double elimination bracket that lasted two days. Northwood battled through the field, defeating California State Fullerton 4-0, Stockton University 4-0, Virginia Tech 4-1, and Bay State College 5-0 to advance to the final.
In the final, Northwood defeated Bay State College again 5-2 to take the championship. Northwood Esports’ star Hunter Woitas led the team with 13 goals in the grand final as he earned MVP accolades.
Evil Geniuses, founded in 1999, is considered to be one of the most successful professional esports organizations on the planet. Evil Geniuses is currently valued at 255 million dollars and has won countless championships across the globe. LG Electronics and LG Ultra Gear sponsored the Invitational.

The esports program at Northwood is open to all players, from those new to competitive gaming to established professional gamers. The goal of the esports program is to give gamers the chance to play competitively while learning more about the growing industry and obtaining a degree from Northwood University.
