Margaret Dodge Garrett was educated in the American Community School in Beirut, at Vassar College and the Maryland Institute of Fine Arts. Her professional career included posts with the Baltimore Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. In addition, she was a moving force in a variety of volunteer social service, literary, religious and artistic organizations in Syria, Paris and Washington. Special awards given to Mrs. Garrett include the Lane Bryant International Volunteer Award, 1969, l’Ordre National du Merite, 1977, the U.S. Department of State Tribute of Appreciation, 1978, and the Smithsonian Institution Certificate of Appreciation, 1981. She has been elected as a member of The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, as a trustee of The Textile Museum, Washington, DC and as a Commissioner of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American Art. Mrs. Garrett was a volunteer for The National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, American Institute for Islamic Affairs at The American University, Washington, DC, and The Textile Museum. “Having been involved with educational and cultural activities abroad for the better part of my life, I am particularly impressed by Northwood’s foreign studies program,” Mrs. Garrett said at the time of her award.
