Margaret Long Arnold served in all of the offices of the Women’s Club of Concord, the New Hampshire Federation of Women’s Clubs and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. As president, she resided at International G.F.W.C. headquarters in Washington, DC and coordinated a literacy program, national community improvement program, sponsored the Museum of Immigration at the base of the Statue of Liberty and built the bell tower at Cathedral of the Pines, honoring women in the service. She served on the U.S. Status of Women’s Commission, was chairman of the Defense Advisory Committee for Women in the Services, was on the US Commission for the U.N. International Women’s Year and presided and led a US delegation to an international conference for women in Munich. Margaret served as Manager, Women’s Activities and Assistant to the Executive Director of AARP. She organized the New Hampshire Council on the Aging prior to the first White House Conference on Aging. Among her awards are the Arents Medal, the highest alumni medal from Syracuse University, the Pettee Medal as New Hampshire’s Most Distinguished Citizen from the University of New Hampshire, the Four Chaplains Award, the Golden Rule Foundation, the National 4-H Alumni award, the Freedom Foundation award and the Black Women’s Agenda Lifetime Achievement Award. Margaret has received the 1994 Women in Public Relations Award. She also has received the President’s Medal for the 21st Century in the National Women’s Hall of Fame. (Deceased, 2004)
