Margaret M. Alkek is Chairman of the Board of the Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation. She and her late husband, Albert, were married for 60 years. Together, they started many companies, including Alkek Oil Corporation. They are known for the lasting impact of their philanthropy in the fields of education, medical science and the arts. Mrs. Alkek has demonstrated her commitment to the future of education through generous contributions to colleges, universities, secondary and elementary schools. Texas Military Institute’s Refectory and Theater were named in her honor. She also was awarded an honorary doctorate from St. Mary’s University. Mrs. Alkek is active in numerous organizations, serving as board member, chair, trustee, officer, advisor and energetic volunteer. She serves on many non-profit boards in Houston and is a member of the Houston Women’s Board & Friends of Northwood University. In recognition of her volunteerism and leadership role in her community, Mrs. Alkek has received many honors, including The Houston Alumnae of Tri Delta Sorority, The Spirit of Anne MorrowLindberg Award and was recognized by the University of Houston Moores School of Music as one of “Houston’s Leading Ladies.” Inside Houston named her one of the “25 Most Powerful People”. She has been chosen to receive the Lifetime Service Award from the Cancer League of Houston. In 1999 she was inducted, along with her daughter, into the Philanthropy in Texas Hall of Fame. The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation will present her with their Founder’s Award and honor her as a Woman of Distinction at the Winterball, January 2000. Mrs. Alkek attended the University of Texas, Victoria Junior College and the University of Houston. She lives in Houston near her daughter, Margaret Williams, grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Charles and Randa Williams and great-grandson, Harrison. (Deceased, 2005)
