1971 – Birmingham, Michigan

Marjorie Whitcomb Sallie, former Headmistress of Bloomfield Hills Academy, was born in New England. She graduated from Brown University where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. She began to teach in Foxboro, Massachusetts, her hometown, and entered independent schools. While at the Northampton School for Girls, she received her M.A. in Education. While continuing to teach, she entered into administration and was associated with schools in South Carolina, Texas, Arizona and Washington. In 1960, after thirty years in boarding schools, she became headmistress of Bloomfield Hills Academy, an affiliate of Northwood and remained there until her retirement in 1973. n 1967, she made a trip to the Holy Land and spent time with Bertha Spafford Vester who had lived in Jerusalem for over eighty years. From this visit came her interest in the Spafford Children’s Home. In 1970, during a trip to Denmark, she spent time at Rebild, resulting in great interest in the Rebild Society. After her retirement, Miss Sallie continued to be active in Altrusa, the A.A.U.W., the Detroit chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the YMCA, the Needlework Guild and Friends of Interlochen. She enjoyed teaching Bible history and developing a course titled Women Who Have Influenced History. (Deceased 1986)
