When it was announced that Richard DeVos, cofounder of Amway, owner of the Orlando Magic basketball team, and a long-time supporter of Northwood University, would visit Northwood's Florida campus to share wisdom and insight relating to his most recent book, The Ten Powerful Phrases for Positive People, excitement around campus built, culminating in a standing room only group of students, faculty and staff.

And when several students later learned they'd have the opportunity to speak with DeVos after the presentation, anticipation levels were pushed over the top, as DeVos took time to personally connect with approximately 30 students immediately following his presentation.

"The Richard DeVos presentation was a dramatic reminder of why Northwood University is so special," commented Dr. Rose Bellanca, Northwood University Florida Campus Provost. Where else can students get the opportunity to speak with such a respected global business leader of his magnitude one on one?" she asked. "The wisdom of his message was of timeless value, and there were literally a few students brought to tears, as they never dreamed they'd have the opportunity to thank the man who's made it possible for thousands of families to bring in much needed income through his entrepreneurial endeavors," she added.

"When I was 15 years-old my parents started selling Amway products back home in Bogota, Colombia. Then my whole family joined the team, with much success. I personally use the Artistry line and I love it. When I bought Rich DeVos' Omniquest book The Ten Powerful Phrases for Positive People, I read it in one day because it was very interesting. Then after listening to Dr. DeVos in the auditorium, I realized that through his worldwide company, he is helping a lot of families accomplish their goals just as my parents did. I am very grateful to Dr. DeVos and to Northwood for helping to shape us into the leaders of tomorrow," shared Adriana Herran, a Northwood senior majoring in International Business.

Emphasizing the value of encouragement, humility, and support, DeVos shared lessons learned from his own life, as well as anecdotes from conversations with close family members, and others including past presidents.

Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1926 during the Great Depression, DeVos credits his interest in owning a business to his grandfather, who sold vegetables door to door, and to his father, who after losing his job as an electrician during the depression always encouraged his son to go into business for himself. And they likely had no idea just how far young Richard, with only fifty dollars would take his entrepreneurial spirit and his strong Christian faith. After establishing a high school friendship with classmate Jay Van Andel, the two eventually founded Amway in their homes in 1959. Today Amway has over three million independent business owners and sales of more than eight billion dollars.

The net effect of phrases such as 'I believe in you,' 'I'm proud of you,' 'I'm sorry,' 'I'm wrong,' 'You can do it,' 'Thank you,' "I need you,' "I trust you,' 'I respect you,' and 'I love you,' can be life changing, DeVos said, while thoughtfully demonstrating that those born without wealth sometimes deserve the most credit for gaining personal and business success, as they have accomplished the most from their vantage point. He noted in the book's introduction that his hope is to help individuals to become positive so they in turn will help others improve their perspectives on life. "If we all do so, I truly believe we can make a real change for the good in our homes, communities, and world," he said.

To further illustrate the point that it's important to acknowledge ones efforts from their starting point, as opposed to comparing unfair, inherited advantages, he shared that he was certain that Northwood students, regardless of their background, would achieve uncompromising personal and professional success providing they sincerely support and value their fellow man.

Northwood's Florida Campus Men's Basketball Team Takes Down Isiah Thomas And The NCAA D-I FIU Panthers

What was initially planned as a quiet, friendly practice game Wednesday night between FIU's new head men's basketball coach Isiah Thomas' Golden Panthers and the venerable Rollie Massimino's Northwood University Seahawks turned into a spirited contest witnessed by more than a few hundred interested fans.
And in the end, it was the veteran Massimino getting the best of the younger Thomas in his very first taste of coaching at the intercollegiate level.

Lester Hunte led all scorers with 18 points and teammate Patrick Horstmann added 13 in Northwood's 71-61 win, a game that was close for 35 minutes before the Seahawks went on a 15-6 run over the final 4:01, to pull away.

Junior college transfers Phil Gary and Marvin Roberts contributed 15 points each, but when it was all said and done, it was Northwood's superior shooting from the field that spelled the difference. The Seahawks shot a consistent 54-percent from the floor, despite turning the ball over 24 times to the FIU defense.

After forcing the 11th tie of the game at 46 on a Tremayne Russell layup, Northwood got up by seven, 56-49, on a pair of Horstmann free throws with 6:53 to play. But FIU battled back, scoring the next six points to close within 56-55 on a Stephon Weaver tip-in moments later.

That would be the Panthers last hurrah of the evening, however, as 3-pointers by Thierno Agne, Jay Duncan and Horstmann led to Northwood's largest lead of the night, 69-56, with just 53 seconds remaining.
