Professor Kevin Petrovsky Supports Environmental Protection

Published on 10/24/2009 12:02:40 PM

As a professor who teaches Environmental Science and Oceanography at Northwood University's Florida campus, Kevin Petrovsky, Associate Academic Dean and Associate Professor, is keenly aware of issues relating to global warming, ozone depletion, acid precipitation, and more.

A firm believer that learning opportunities exist both inside and outside of the classroom, he can often be found leading student groups to areas rich in vegetation as well as to the Atlantic shore.

This knowledge and earnest desire to protect the environment has landed him an invitation to join West Palm Beach's Green City Task Force, and inspired him to support causes which spur increased environmental protection by participating in causes such as the recent International Day of Climate Action Rally held in Delray Beach, Florida.

The Green City Task Force is designed to provide recommendations to the West Palm Beach Mayor and city commission regarding ways in which city government, business, and residents can become more sustainable with respect to environmental impact. It can propose new legislation, administrative action or community activities with initiatives such as water and energy conservation, community and urban gardens, transportation, waste management, and natural vegetation landscaping.

One of 5200 demonstrations held in 181 countries as a kick-off to the Copenhagen Summit on climate change that will be held in December, The International Climate Change Day emphasized the need to reduce carbon in the air. Petrovsky said he participated in the rally "because this summit will be our last real chance to institute meaningful carbon reduction policies and practices to prevent catastrophic environmental damage from climate change. I wanted to do my small part to help send the message to our government leaders that we want real actions and reforms to try and minimize the devastating effects that can and will occur from climate change, for us and for future generations," he said.
