MIDLAND, MI – The Cato Institute's Michael Tanner will speak on "Health Care Reform, Free Markets, and YOU!" on the campus of Northwood University at 4000 Whiting Drive in Midland on Tuesday, October 27th at 7:00 p.m. in the Griswold Lecture Hall. The event is co-sponsored by the Northwood University Economics Association and Students for a Free Economy, a project of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. The event is free and open to the public.

Regarding the event, Northwood University President Keith Pretty shared that, "with the health care debate raging in Washington D.C., we are fortunate to have Michael Tanner here on campus to add his unique perspective to these discussions." Lance Lewis, Northwood University academic dean, seconded this notion saying, "health care is an important issue for everyone in the U.S. as it is an overarching question of funding, access, the role of government and the expectations of a society. I look forward to Mr. Tanner's presentation on such a critical issue." Economics Department Chair Dale Matcheck also added that, "for years Michael Tanner has been one of the most influential and articulate advocates for market-based solutions to our most intractable social policy problems. Given the high stakes of health care reform for our health, our finances and our freedom, we would be wise to consider his ideas on the subject." Senior Economics Major and Economics Association President William Freeland shared that the Economics Association feels privileged to be able to give Northwood students and Midland community members the opportunity to hear Michel Tanner, one of the nation's most well-recognized and thoughtful analysts of social policy in America, speak on health care.

Michael Tanner is a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute where he heads research into a variety of domestic policies with a particular emphasis on health care reform, social welfare policy and Social Security. He is the author of four books including Healthy Competition: What's Holding Back Health Care and How to Free It published in 2007. Tanner's writings have appeared in nearly every major American newspaper, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today. A prolific writer and frequent guest lecturer, Tanner appears regularly on network and cable news programs. Before joining Cato in 1993, Tanner served as director of research of the Georgia Public Policy Foundation and as legislative director for the American Legislative Exchange Council.

The Cato Institute was founded in 1977 by Edward H. Crane. It is a nonprofit public policy research foundation headquartered in Washington, D.C. The mission of the Cato Institute is to increase the understanding of public policies based on the principles of limited government, free markets, individual liberty and peace.
