In Midland, Dr. Willa Stauffer shared remembrances of the early years during lunch at the Hach Student Life Center. Over 350 people turned out to hear about the early days and the friends who believed in the vision of Drs. R. Gary Stauffer and Arthur E. Turner. An on-screen photo essay accompanied Willa's talk and many a tear was noticed as departed friends and early events came into view. The Stauffer children and grandchildren, as well as family friends, joined in the celebrations and it was truly a homecoming for all.
Texas marked Founders' Day 2009 by committing to sustainability -- a goal completely aligned with our foundation philosophy, The Northwood Idea -- and to maintaining our profitability while also addressing the environmental impact of our people and our actions.
Texas enjoyed a full day of activities. The Fashion Marketing & Management students produced a style show focused on sustainable fashion which featured classy, tasteful, and environmentally friendly clothing. Entrepreneur Tom Kemper, the CEO of Dolphin Blue, Inc. and DolphinBlue.com, a business built on principles of environmental and social sustainability, spoke on "Why and How We Should Pursue the Triple Bottom Line." A panel discussion followed, led by PBS TV personality Dennis McCuistion. The afternoon and evening saw the unveiling of the Texas Time Capsule, games of the future, dinner with a car show, and ended with dancing in the Knight's Hall.
Florida celebrated the entire week of March 23-27! Monday was Ethics Day with a luncheon and forum; Tuesday was Free Enterprise Day, with alumni returning to campus for discussions on business; and Wednesday was Business & the Arts Day with Mike Bracci, chairman of the Palm Beach Cultural Council, on campus. An evening piano concert, Fantasia on Mysterium, was performed by Michael Yannette who later shared how creativity and the arts are necessary components of business success. Diversity & Cultural Awareness took center stage on Thursday with a panel discussion, a double-header baseball game, and an evening presentation by the Hospice of Palm Beach County. Friday was Entrepreneurship Day where Outstanding Business Leader and NU honorary doctorate recipient Dr. Frank McKinney spoke at lunch and held a book signing.
Lots of activity throughout our system with more to come throughout the year.
Our international centers will host their celebrations this summer and early fall. Across the country alumni and friends will gather to commemorate and honor the founding of Northwood University.
